Education for Children

Children are the world's most valuable resource and its best hope for the future -John Fitzgerald Kennedy

After 15 years, an unpleasant circumstance took me back to Africa – Cameroon my country that I left when I was a child. The trip was emotional and exciting. During my stay I had a chance to visit a preschool called “Ecole maternelle bilingue de Tchouno “situated in a small village in a town called Bafang in West Cameroon. When I arrived at the classroom, I was welcomed by little children ages of 3 – 4 years running into my arms with big smiles on their faces. I was so touched; my heart was filled with joy and my eyes full of tears.

I was contemplating the classroom and was surprised by how few of educational tools they had. The classroom had a couple of crude tables and chairs; and in a corner there was one bed made out of bamboo for naptime. One thing I admired about those little ones was the fact that although they did not have much, they were so full of joy.

I was so moved and felt a huge need to help. I then spoke with the teacher to find out what their needs are. She told me that they needed anything that was educational such as: Coloring books, writing notebooks, crayons, scissors, non-toxic Glue sticks Liquid Glue, pencils….Toys (play dough, puzzles, educational toys, etc…) Story books (English books are welcome due to the fact that they are teaching children English and French).

What motivates me to help? I do believe that education is very important and any child in this world should have access to it and have the necessary tools available that will promote their education.

I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catchers mitt on both hands. You need to be able to throw something back. ~Maya Angelou
